2 weeks ago, I had the jot of photographing one of the most amazing births Ive ever seen! Cortni had been planning the peaceful birth of her baby girl Malia, and with a little bit of letting go, she did just that. The power that surrounds birth is tangible; a great feeling of sacred change..

I want to thank Cortni for being so open to sharing these private and touching photographs so that my clients can see what I offer in the terms of birth photography. All mamas choose the images I post, so there is never a chance that I will post something beyond the comfort level of the family.

♥Thea is my friend. Joe, her husband, is a pretty amazing guy, and their children? well, their cuteness speaks for itself. I was flattered when they asked me to capture them through my lens and what better backdrop than where Thea and Joe’s roots lay, in beautiful and quaint, Cumberland. We just walked around (something I lovingly coined the ‘rolling photo shoot’) just checking out the town and all of its textures and backdrops! Now THIS woman makes pregnancy look good! A true blue beauty inside and out, I feel lucky having just the few hours I did to get to know her a little bit. As you can see, we used multiple hair and outfit changes to make the most of our time :) I love the crimpy mermaid hair, don't you? Nokimis, thank you for the opportunity to play as I don't do it as often anymore. Spending time with you and Jesse is super heartwarming, I can only hope for more hangouts in the future! I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Adrian and Katie during their pregnancy. These guys are such loving, calm and intuitive parents, its no wonder photographing beautiful miss Paige was easy breezy. We even got a some sleepy shots which is much more challenging when babes make a late appearance (this little beauty was 12 days overdue). I feel so blessed to have such wonderful, grateful and realistic parents to work with. Sometimes when you go into a newborn session with very high expectations, the stress of getting those 'sleepy shots' can be overwhelming to parents if their babe is fussy or very alert. I often see parents worried about 'wasting my time' and stopping to nurse, comfort, rock and pat their babies. The reality is, the newborn session isn't about quantity, but quality. A few amazing shots that make you remember just how precious they are. Im so grateful these guys allowed to 'be what will'. We got some super cute, chubby little grin shots and when we tired Paige right out, she even fell asleep and let me pose her :) Thanks again guys, to say your family is lovely, is an understatement! ♥

Undoubtedly, this was the largest bunch of kids I have ever photographed, and boy was this session a blast! I was contacted by Ashley back in the winter to purchase a gift certificate, and due to the rain and schedules our session had to wait! It is so heart warming to see two beautiful families join together to form such an amazing bunch and I still feel so lucky to be the person documenting it for years to come! The half heart image was an idea of Debbie's, to symbolize the combination of the two families and I think it was so creative! Thanks for the opportunity Clint and Debbie!, your children are wonderful, as are you!

Last month I had the honour of being a bridesmaid to one of my oldest friends, Jolene. Her and Jason were so happy and in love on that day it was hard to not step into the role of photographer to capture moments nobody but a dear friend would see. Although I was not the hired photog, I tried to snap a few pics (without getting in the way, and without flash) from my perspective. I told Jason and Jolene I would film as much of the wedding as possible and make them an HD video. I will link to that video when it is completed but for now I thought I would blog a few of my favourite images of that day. These are less comprehensive (I didn't worry about blogging every family member and every special moment) and more photojournalistic as I hid for most of the photos, and allowed myself to let go and be pressure free (of course!) Daniel and Shelby are expecting their first baby and we thought (since they and I are both members) using the ultra-cool Rod & Gun out at the courtenay side of the lake would be an awesome and unique backdrop. There is nothing as wonderful as the beach. I love photographing children near the ocean because I have always loved the juxtaposition of large (the sea) next to new (young child) or old and new, which you can see as a common vein in my work. This session was special for the MacMillans because their other children had already had photos taken in the past but Oskar had never been in the 'limelight' of a professionals camera. I was flattered they chose me, and when I arrived, I realized I had already met this family last year at Katie and Keith's wedding! This is precisely why I love the Comox Valley SO much. Word of mouth is everything and no matter how hard you work to promote your art, happy clients and making an impression still counts! Enjoy MacMillans, it was truly a great time photographing you :)

You might recognize Jessie's parents from their maternity session we did at Seal Bay Park. SHe sure turned out to be a sweet little baby and photographing was great! Although Jessie wasn't very sleepy for her session, we did capture a lot of snuggles from mommy and daddy and managed to click a few images of jessie hanging out on her daddies mining equipment! I joined Quincy and her amazing little family on their property in Courtenay for some natural shots of her just playing around. If I had one word to explain Brodie it would be amazing!!You can check out Kevin and Brodie and all they do at their website for Cumberland Village Works. YES, these guys are the people who bring us Big Time Out every year and now they even operate a studio space for rent so they list of amazingness and musical wonder is literally oozing from these two! She is so kind and gentle, a supremely talented singer/songwriter/musician, and a savvy business woman. Oops! I said one word didn't I? :) This shoot was probably my longest 'in the making' as our schedules, winter etc kind of caught up with us. Deciding to walk up and down the main drag in Cumberland was a no-brainer and it worked for this session on so many levels. Brodie, I totally hope these are what you envisioned. Isabelle turns 90!

As many of you know, Jamie Edgett and I are great friends. What many of you may not know is that she has a super amazing family filled with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Her Grandmother, Isabelle was turning 90 and she asked me to photograph the event and try to capture some special shots. This was the first time in a very long time the grandchildren had been photographed together and so I was very excited about preserving this wonderful day for Grandma Bella as well as the entire family. Sarah and Colt are such a sweet and beautiful couple! When they asked if Seal Bay was a good place to do their photographs I couldn't have been more thrilled. We ventured into the trails, on to the beach and then politely asked a property owner heading back to town to use their incredible field of buttercups for a few extra shots! Due to the private nature of Maternity shoots (especially semi or completely nude) not all of the amazing things you can do can be seen on my blog. If you want those shots for your own shoot, but are leary about having them seen on the internet, have no fear! I will always work with you to ensure privacy. While in the hospital a few weeks ago as a Doula, I ran into Caitlin and her friend Kaitlyn (hehe) and I was promptly contacted the next day about doing photos! I love how small our little town is and how word of mouth is so important. I often struggle with the 'he said she said' and I feel like I am always trying to keep my head up and embrace (not struggle with) my photographic competition. In truth, and this session proves it, people choose me because they love my work OR they choose another photographer because they love their work. Its really simple but its always flattering to hear that you are the first choice, I wont lie.

Caitlin's mother passed away before she could meet baby Kira so as a homage to her Grandma, we photographed Kira with her ring and some of her gardening tools. Fresh magnolia blossoms represent her love of gardening and the tender time in May when those blossoms bloom and the commencement of spring is signified. Kira was so sleepy, I literally just moved her here and there and she didn't even twitch! the dream baby to photograph. Caitlin, you are such a graceful and beautiful mother. Your love for your baby girl and the love your brother and dad have for her too, is so apparent and I felt honoured and filled with joy leaving your home that day! I hope you love these :) ♥

Horray For Spring! There was seriously no better of a family to celebrate with on Mothers Day this year than the McDowell's! I met Alesha, Rob, Abby and Jace at Seal Bay Park and we just played, ran, jumped and goofed around through the trails and down to the beach! I feel so lucky. I know I say it all the time, but I do. This job gives me such privy; such a candid space to view lives changing and growing with life. Emily and Drew are such amazingly wonderful people but the feeling is exacerbated when I look at these images. I feel so honored and full of admiration for growing families and this is definitely where my heart lies in so many aspects of my life. Pregnancy and birth are jsut so transfomational and exquisite. Emily and Drew moved gracefully from 'singleness' to parent hood, 'they' are right - they "Should be making babies for Canada" haha. Emily and Ali are good friends too, so when I arrived to photograph Zoe at just a couple of days old, Ali and Jonah ( the blog entry directly before this one ) were visiting. WOW. For those of you who follow my blog, you are definitely aware of my little technological hiccup that happened last week. It feels really nice to have my computer back and to be processing all of the lovely shoots that have been waiting to be blogged!

This weeks Blog extravaganza starts with sweet baby Jonah. This sweet little boy is so dear to me. His mother equally so. It always makes me so warm and fuzzy when I see the love that a new mother has for her baby. I read a quote once that said something along the lines that a "mother is born, from the woman she was and will never be again, as she is transformed"... Ali's mother, Jocelyn has been such a tremendous help and support, I am lucky to have met her so Ali must feel the same way times a thousand. Ali, it feels like saying thank you isn't enough. No words can express how moved I am, really. But in the tradition of societal 'norms' I will say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I have actually known Lee and Alyssa for about 15 years as we all went to junior high together! Its so amazing and awesome that these two ended up together and their three beautiful girls are a testament to that love. Lee works for BC HYdro and has been working a camp life for a long time. The family decided it was time to move closer to each other, so as they say goodbye to the Comox Valley and head up north closer to Lee's camp, we thought it would make sense to capture the girls in their own neighborhood, playing and doing what kids do best. We simply took a walk about the block and snapped images here and there, trying to capture the natural essence of this lovely family! I met Emily at NIC a few years back so I was thrilled when she called me, wanting maternity photos done of her incredibly gorgeous baby bump. Emily is so much fun, so quirky and sweet and funny! Ok Im lucky. Luckier than the average bear. For so many reasons, but getting to photograph pregnant women, newborn babies, and changed families is something so special. I had the amazing opportunity to be a part of Tayte's birth and let me tell you he has one incredible Mama. He came out so cute and little and on his big sisters second birthday to boot! The emotion in these images speaks for itself. A new sister, a mother of two. I feel so blessed to be able to see women through this process and help preserve the amazing experience that birth is. I always strive to make my photography an expression of the family or person I am photographing. The sessions need to be simple and I never spend time researching poses or planning too much. I am a people person and engaging on that relational level with my clients far outweighs being the best at what I do or impressing people who are photography aficionados. Being in love with the connection is more than enough to satisfy me. My clients witness this first hand, because making the session memorable, sensitive and unique is what is most important to me and to them. I feel honored. Truly. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I love my job.

I have known Jenn for years. Her sis and I have been buddies since grade six so I was so thrilled to get a chance to photograph this little cutie. Even though Jenn has two older children, she is so natural and graceful with her newborn. Colby was calm and alert for most of our session and considering he is already a month old, was very cooperative with the many different poses we tried. I have the most amazing job and it being involved with amazing families like this that make it extra extra special. Megan asked me a while back if I was interested in doing a funky/sexy boudoir session in the wintery forest and you know what I said? HECK YES! My little passion for fashion always comes out at sessions like this and doing them is really tons of fun! I'll admit I was blown away the first time I heard of Arbonne. After knowing Penny for a few years ( and I photographed her son Brad last year at grad) I was really excited to hear more about this amazing line of body care and makeup products. Arbonne is actually a 30 year old company that has a very strong commitment to green, sustainable and responsible formulations and you can definitely see and FEEL the difference. Not only are all of the products completely vegan, but even the packaging is renewable with full FSC certification. They also take full responsibility in harvesting and replenishing the botanicals they use and even ensure they never use endangered plant species in their formulations. I am personally very attracted to their makeup products. Comparable to MAC or other department stores, Arbonne really performs with the big boys but sets itself WAY apart by being safe and chemical-free. As far as Penny is concerned, you will never meet a kinder, more beautiful woman. Her commitment to a satisfied client is beyond question and she will always come to the rescue if you need her (ie, Arbonne Gellee, a cooling, botanical-filled gel that Penny hooked me up with after an unfortunate tanning bed incident I would rather not discuss in too much embarrassing detail!). Its actually pretty safe to say that Penny works her butt off and I am truly proud to say I know her :) Enjoy these images Penny, any excuse to hang out with you for a few hours is a good one, taking your pictures was far from work!

There are few things as exquisite as a woman with a belly in 'full bloom'. I am always so compelled toward pregnancy and for those of you that know me personally, you understand how much passion I have about it! Everything about Raylene is graceful and lovely so, naturally, taking her photos was so easy. She was willing to get cold and wet at Goose Spit, even in the middle of January. With her baby due to make his/her appearance in less than two weeks, we decided adding a little bit of Valentines Day hearts was in order and I really like how these images turned out! Well I've finally done it! After months of thought and inspiration I have finally started producing fine art prints of uniquely edited nature scenery and insects. Trying to find the beauty on a macro level is something I have always loved, long before I ever owned an SLR and I seriously have an obsession with the details. Call it being a virgo, a natural thinker, or just maturing into an observational woman, I have really begun to embrace the little everyday miracles our Mother Earth has to offer us. I am constantly awed by the beauty of Vancouver Island. We literally live in the most beautiful place on earth and sometimes, with our busy lives, its easy to miss it. These images are meant to preserve memories, and make you stop to enjoy the moments you may otherwise miss living your busy life. Its officially 2011 ! The Weatherall's new baby girl Sophia was my first subject of the new year, and how lucky I was to have such a calm and serene baby to photograph. This new family is so amazingly in tune with each other and their new babe, I was in awe being in their space and watching them interact. Her daddy, Mike, works for BC Hydro so we photographed Sophia in her daddy's utility belt! Even though Sophia was almost a month old ( usually I recommend 1-5 days old ), she was totally amazing to hang out with and didn't complain at all as I tried to get her to sleep in various poses! (which I did eventually succeed at! ) Thanks Katie and Mike for all of the help and for allowing me into your home :) You two are amazing parents and a great example to many that with a little peace, calm, and patience, having a new baby dosen't need to be stressful and crazy! This couple are pretty special to me. I met Jackie years ago when we worked together (as hairdressers). We always talked about babies and she was so excited to start a family. When I found out she was pregnant I was BEYOND thrilled. Finally, and after much anticipation, little Magnus was born. It's obvious that these guys prepared the right way, not with the acquisition tons of baby "things", but with knowledge and respect for the delicate few days and weeks of their little angel's life. The holiday season always makes me mushy. I feel like it is such a great time of year to reflect and consider all of the wonderful things I have done during the year. I have this amazing job photographing so many lovely people, it literally feels like a dream. A few weeks back I had the pleasure of meeting Ramona at a local parenting group, so I was delighted when she emailed me wanting to get photos done of her new baby boy Tarran. This amazing family was the subject of TWO of my sessions last week. We headed out into the shivery, snowy weather and Lindsay was having quite a few contractions. Being fairly familiar with birth and the process behind it, and the fact that she was a couple of weeks early, I tired to assure Lindsay she was probably not be in real labor. Boy was I WRONG! our session ended at noon and by 3 am baby Orrik was here :) So this is the first dual blog post I have ever done. Talk about cutting it close! I hope you guys love your images, you are a truly beautiful couple and your new baby boy is absolutely perfect!

Halloween was such a great day! besides taking my amazing children out trick r treating I had the distinct pleasure of photographing a group of incredible dancers in a creepy Hallows eve location! Drak's Castle is well known by old time vally-ites but may be a secret to many. One of my best freinds Livea Gill's dance company is True Colours and I was so into it when she suggested this location to capture her dancers in a "creepy" vibe for their "lucid nightmare" theme this year. As you can see these guys were beyond amazing in bare feet and leotards in nearly sub zero temperatures!! :)

Another amazing Fall session this week, this time with the wonderful Boelk family! You may remember their beautiful little girl Tori from a session I did in the summer and now they are 40 weeks pregnant with their next baby, a little boy, who's name is going to be a surprise! They suggested Macdonald Wood in Comox to get some beach and woods scenery and it couldn't have worked out better! We got there early enough to catch the burning sun hanging in the crisp morning sky and some really cool cloud and reflection and silhouette images. Thanks again guys! Sending you positive, relaxing and utterly blissful birth wishes :)

I got to photograph this little cutie because her mom won the FireFly: New Beginnings Market Days draw way back in July! We finally met up on a drizzly day for my first-ever visit to the Sky Park down at the Courtenay bird sanctuary. Michaela is such a vibrant and care free little girl, it was so magical watching her play in leaves and be so adorable!

I had another glorious photo shoot a few weeks back with these two beautiful little ladies! Keeping miss Jolene still was a challenge in itself and her vim for life was a reminder to me that life cant be taken too seriously. Even though she was on the move, we got some amazing shots! Baby Justine is equally amazing and her sweet nature and laid back attitude made her a cinch to photograph! The Reiker family contacted me a few weeks ago wanting to do a fun fall session at Miracle Beach. This family was so full of energy and "joie de vivre" and I had tons of fun playing with the children.We did what I like to call a "rolling" session where we just walk through an area taking shots along the way. It allows for natural play and interaction within the family and in the environment and completely cuts out the stuffy family photo session. I feel like this gives way to more candid and natural experience. You guys were a joy to meet and photograph, I hope these images are everything you hoped for. I had a very hard time to cutting them down to these as there are SOO many proofs to choose from ... Enjoy!

I got to photograph the most beautiful little baby this week! If you haven't checked this family out before, the Hanseds were the amazing couple who had their maternity session in the river a few weeks back! Beautiful baby Sophia came a few weeks earlier than expected and she is so snugly and teeny! Her sleepiness was the main reason this session was so successful. She basically let me position her however I wanted and with a little help from her loving parents, I once again left the Hanseds with the feeling like I was the one who gained the most from the experience. A genuine and beautiful family, I can only hope I can keep photographing them as they grow and experience life! Louise, thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me this experience, and for bravely allowing me to post an image of you nurturing your baby as nature intended ♡

I admit, we did this session a long time ago for the fun of it and I have been so busy lately, all fo my creative projects seem to fall the the way side! Fortunately I found time this week and am very happy to finally be showing these shots off. The theme was sexy "Spy vs Spy". I tried to make everything oppose the other. Unfortunately for us the day we choose was literally down pouring and most of the time was spent sitting in my truck praying for it to let up! Next year, when the weather is nicer, you will catch these two models ( and best friends ) again, I guarantee it!

This was definitely one of the most amazing couples I have ever met. They are so amazingly natural with each other and it was instantaneously comfortable. Louise has a light about her. A beautiful river goddess. Their birth will no doubt be exquisite and I cant wait to meet and photograph the little being growing in her belly :) This session was done on September 26th and the water so so cold! I was beyond impressed with this loving couples' amazing attitude and willingness to jump right in :) Thank you SO much for doing this with me, I feel so lucky to have met such awesomely brave people to photograph in the water so late in the year! This little newbie was just so tiny and sweet! I always feel so lucky to be allowed into someone's home to photograph something so precious, and with so much trust. This time it was a very happy grandma, wanting to capture the newness of her new granddaughter posing this sleeping beauty was so easy and she just slept through our session which allowed for a some super-cute shots :) Thanks so much again to this family for asking me to do this. This was officially the last wedding of the season. Taking place on a rainy BC day on beautiful Quadra Island, this wedding was so beautiful and filled with lots of family love! Shannon and Keith are so lovely which shone through quite apparently. From a simple gaze to the heart wrenching vows, I can honestly say these two are MADLY in love :) Thank you so much for allowing me to capture your day! I first met Lisa and Joe for their maternity session this summer. This incredably loving couple didn't know what they were having so I was so excited to find out that Lisa had her girl ;) At just 5 days old, baby Olivia was a joy to photograph. Even though the was very alert for most of the shoot she did end up feeling quite sleepy by the end and I was able to capture her dozing too! Joe is a huge baseball fan which was the inspiration behind the glove shot! Unfortunately this family suffered a loss just a few days before Olivia was born and I hope that the photographs of her with the special doll and book are something this amazing little family can cherish forever.. I feel so blessed to have been part of your journey and look foreword to photographing Olivia as she grows into a lovely little lady :) Enjoy!

This little girl was the biggest treat! I met Kaili's mom through a new group of ladies with babies I started hanging out with this summer and she had a really exciting idea for a shoot. One of the images here is part of that awesome concept but I wont say which or how quite yet! :) Kaili's grandparents actually own one of the most iconic properties in the Valley so it was only right that we shot there! We even got to take a cool panorama of her great grandfathers' hand-created ( and FULL of great energy ) stone Labyrinth! An early morning session is such a nice way to capture that glowing light and with a subject as genuine and sweet as this cutie was, it sure makes the perks to my awesome little photography job pretty darn perky. This summer has been really great! I feel so supported by so many people and this wedding is jsut a reflection of that. These guys had lost their photographer last minute and a friend suggested ME! :) I was so flattered and equally honored, of course. I met up with Keith and Katie at the beach as they said their vows on the sandy shore and then followed back to their house to just capture the party going on! The food was excellent as was the company ( as Im sure you can tell from the images ) and the signature martinis ;)There were so many beautiful people having fun, choosing who/what to blog was so difficult. ( If you're wondering there are literally hundreds of proofs..) I loved all the kids there and the simple beauty of the set up. You guys are so sweet together, this was truly so much fun for me! This little babe is so special to me. I photographed her a few months back and have since become good friends with her mother, Stephanie. Lilly is beyond adorable and when I found out she was picking up a Cutie Tutu at FireFly: New Beginnings made by my good friend and local photographer Crystal of CrystalClear Photography I JUMPED at the opportunity to photograph Lilli prancing around the river where we've spent many days this summer just "hanging" out... Steph, you deserve ultimate happiness for every selfless thing you do for everyone around you but yourself. Your charm and vigor are so attractive to me, and anyone lucky enough to enjoy the light you exude will most definitely agree with me. I had the great opportunity to photograph Sarah and Ryan's beautiful new baby girl. She is already a month old and I've been so busy with school lately that blog posts have been delayed. AAAh! here it is! my very first wedding :) and lucky me to have had these two to photograph! The love this family shares runs so deep into the generations and the morning of the wedding you could feel a tangible energy being shared among sisters, aunties, grandmothers and mothers alike. Erin was a little nervous when I showed up ( as I presume most brides are on the morning of THEIR big days ) and the energy just kept building on the way to the beach. I felt so involved with them, wanting to feel a connection so that emotion would show in the images...♥ There are literally hundreds of proofs and no way to whittle, so this is merely SOME of what was captured. Thank you so very much Erin and Matt. This was an amazing start to many more weddings in my future and I feel so flattered and honored that you took a chance on me :) I hope as the years roll by , you can look back on these moments and remember them with the fondest of thoughts! This post dosen't need a lot of introduction. As you can see, Kaiah is obviously one of the most beautiful little girls ever. Mind, you I may be a tad bias. Regardless, these images are so special to me. This little girls' mother especially, will forever be held in my highest regard. Looking at these images, I will always be reminded of our special bond and warm memories of before, during and after her birth. . Her hair and piercing blue eyes are gasp worthy, and when you look at Kaiah, she just knows, like an old soul:)

I first want to start this blog post by thanking the Sawchucks for being patient with me. I had to cancel on them the first time our session was scheduled because of my "other" job as a Doula. My last client went into labor the day that our shoot was planned and they graciously and kindly accepted the fact that I was going to be unavailable. When we did get together ( 2 weeks ago almost to the day ) it was sunny, warm and perfect day to head out the Courtenay side of Comox Lake and capture them playing through the woods and by the waters edge. The boys, as you can plainly see, are ridiculously cute. It was such a pleasure capturing candids of them just being themselves. Enjoy your images guys, they were such a pleasure to go through. This post is HUGE due to the fact that I have terrible whittling skills and I find it nearly impossible to choose when there are SO many amazing images of the kids and the family to pick from. :)
